Episode 39: Farm Update And Hca Cupping Results

[00:00:01] Tom Greenwell: Good. How are you?
[00:00:01] Matt Carter: Good. Hey, everybody. It’s, early August, and I’m sitting here with Tom Greenwell, and he is the CEO of Greenwell Farms, as you well know. We didn’t do a interview last month because you were the Marshal in the Fourth of July parade, right?
[00:00:17] Tom Greenwell: Yeah, that was a lot of fun.
[00:00:18] Matt Carter: Yeah? So you and Jan got to ride in the convertible and wave to everybody.
[00:00:22] Tom Greenwell: Wave to everybody, smile, and.
[00:00:24] Matt Carter: That’s awesome.
[00:00:24] Tom Greenwell: Yeah.
[00:00:24] Matt Carter: The, it’s nice that they were honoring Kona Coffee this year.
[00:00:27] Tom Greenwell: Yeah.
[00:00:27] Matt Carter: And, and, and our, our farmers. So quick update of the farm. What’s going on? How’s the repairs going? How’s everything moving forward?
[00:00:35] Tom Greenwell: Well, the repairs are moving along. We got the majority of the nursery and the mill and, all that kind of prep back. It’s gonna look, it’s gonna look beautiful when it’s done.
[00:00:48] Matt Carter: Gotcha.
[00:00:48] Tom Greenwell: The grass is starting to grow in. Below, lower part of the farm is still gonna need some work, but we’re at least farming it now.
[00:00:58] Matt Carter: Good.
[00:00:58] Tom Greenwell: Yeah.
[00:00:59] Matt Carter: Glad to hear that. So last weekend or last week, I should say, they held the annual Hawaii Coffee Association Conference on Maui.
[00:01:07] Tom Greenwell: Yeah.
[00:01:08] Matt Carter: You attended.
[00:01:09] Tom Greenwell: Oh, yeah.
[00:01:09] Matt Carter: Ben was involved in the putting together of it, right?
[00:01:12] Tom Greenwell: Yep. He’s-
[00:01:12] Matt Carter: And how’d it go?
[00:01:14] Tom Greenwell: Well, it went great. It was a very different type of conference.
[00:01:18] Matt Carter: Mm-hmm.
[00:01:19] Tom Greenwell: But it was pulled off very well. Lot of fun. I think, everybody there was. We had some, you know, some big meetings, and, vendors were happy I think. Yeah, Maui did a good job.
[00:01:39] Matt Carter: Glad to hear that. So everybody looks forward to the cupping contest because that’s where all the different, growing regions submit their best coffees, and there’s, multiple categories. And, we came back with this one this year.
[00:01:53] Tom Greenwell: Yeah.
[00:01:53] Matt Carter: This is, second place in the micro lot pulp division for our Pacamara washed.
[00:01:59] Tom Greenwell: Right.
[00:02:00] Matt Carter: Tell us about this coffee.
[00:02:01] Tom Greenwell: Well, this coffee is, grown up at, the 2,800-foot level. It came in second place, at 0.07 points behind-
[00:02:13] Matt Carter: Wow…
[00:02:13] Tom Greenwell: the winner.
[00:02:14] Matt Carter: Wow.
[00:02:14] Tom Greenwell: So it was, really tight.
[00:02:16] Matt Carter: Sure.
[00:02:16] Tom Greenwell: You know?
[00:02:16] Matt Carter: Sure.
[00:02:17] Tom Greenwell: And I think all the coffees entered this year all cupped above 80.
[00:02:21] Matt Carter: That’s great.
[00:02:22] Tom Greenwell: And, we actually had a 86.72, I believe. And, it was, yeah, a lot of fun. I mean, it, this coffee has done well in the past, and-
[00:02:36] Matt Carter: Gotcha…
[00:02:36] Tom Greenwell: it’s still doing good.
[00:02:37] Matt Carter: So that lot is different from what we sell as Elizabeth J?
[00:02:41] Tom Greenwell: Yeah, the Elizabeth J- actually now, is, yeah, ’cause Elizabeth J is grown here-
[00:02:51] Matt Carter: I see…
[00:02:51] Tom Greenwell: at Greenwell Farms-
[00:02:52] Matt Carter: Gotcha…
[00:02:52] Tom Greenwell: where we do the tours. It, it has, won in the past.
[00:02:57] Matt Carter: Yeah. Oh, one of my favorites. Yeah.
[00:02:59] Tom Greenwell: Yeah. And this is just.
[00:03:00] Matt Carter: So are we gonna see this, coming out of the Mauka Estates soon?
[00:03:03] Tom Greenwell: Oh, absolutely.
[00:03:04] Matt Carter: Yeah. Awesome.
[00:03:05] Tom Greenwell: Yeah.
[00:03:05] Matt Carter: Look forward to that because when you drink this coffee, it’s almost, you know, it’s apricot, it’s cherry, it’s white peach, it’s honey. It’s just all these really delicate fruity notes. Fantastic cup of coffee yeah?
[00:03:16] Tom Greenwell: It is. It’s, it just– I like to call it, it’s kind of a juicy cup of coffee.
[00:03:23] Matt Carter: Mm, yeah. Sure.
[00:03:24] Tom Greenwell: ‘Cause you have all those flavors coming out, you know?
